San i java

The word "san" in the Bosnian/Croatian/Serbian family of languages is a homophone for the the word "sun" in English. It means "a dream". The antonym of "san", a dream, is the reality, the state of being awake ... which has a word of its own in that family of languages: "java".

So, today's announcement from my friends over at Sun Microsystems, in so many ways is like a dream coming to being. We're waking up to a new reality: Java has indeed been liberated, and jag's Duke is free. Richard Stallman is praising Sun's unique qualities as leading the way for a whole industry.

I'd like to thank everyone involved in making this happen: people both inside and outside Sun, free runtime & GNU Classpath developers, Java packagers, free software distributions, various foundations, companies, Java user groups, and everyone else who's been working tirelessly over the past years to make it happen. You know who you are. This is your success.

We have all won in the best possible way, with the creators of the Java language taking their place among us, and leading the change from now themselves. I'm looking forward to see all the good things that will come out of this historical move.

I'm off to dream about it.
